Caring for Your Waxed Canvas Knife Roll
What is waxed canvas?
Waxed canvas - we love the stuff! It's what cowboys used for their rain slickers back in the day and it is now commonly used for all sorts of goods like bags, aprons, and knife rolls.
As the name suggests, waxed canvas is canvas that has been coated in paraffin wax. The wax gets completely embedded into the canvas, making it water and stain resistant, which is why we love it in the kitchen.
The fabric develops a patina with use, similar to leather, giving it that classic crinkly look. If cared for properly, a waxed canvas anything will last you a lifetime.
How to care for your waxed canvas knife roll
Do NOT put your knife roll in the washing machine.
Instead, we recommend either hosing off your knife roll (think kitchen sprayer) OR spot cleaning, with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft bristled brush. If the water is too hot, you will melt the wax.
From time to time, you may notice bare spots appear on your knife roll, as the wax does wear off with use. To keep your knife roll functional and looking good, you can reapply the wax.
We recommend using this wax.
Simply apply a little wax with a lint free cloth and use a hair dryer to seal it in. You can do this spot by spot or the entire roll.
A little goes a long way. If you apply too much, it will be tacky. To remedy this, apply some heat and wipe off the excess.
